Smoked Turkey Recipe – Coated In The Homemade Spices

Have you ever wondered how to smoke up a turkey? This is the best smoked turkey recipe you’ll ever try. I’ve explained the step-by-step guide to make the smoked turkey at home. Coated in the homemade spice rub, this turkey is slowly smoked to tender and juicy perfection.

  • 12 lb turkey giblets with the neck removed
  • ½ cup BBQ rub
  • 1 recipe turkey brine optional, if you want to brine your turkey then you can skip the chicken broth basting
  • 1 lemon quartered
  • 1 onion quartered
  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • Fresh herbs for garnish
  • Cooking spray
  • Four sprigs of fresh herbs such as parsley, thyme, or rosemary

Step 1: First of all, preheat the smoker to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. The smoker must be loaded with applewood.

Step 2: A large disposable aluminum pan must be coated with cooking spray. Now, place the turkey in the pan and tuck the wings under the body.

Step 3: Stuff the cavity of the turkey with lemon, onions, and herbs. If you want to tie the legs together, use a kitchen twine.

Step 4: The BBQ rub must be sprinkled all over the surface of the turkey.

Step 5: Now, place the turkey in a smoker and cook it for 6 to 7 hours, basting with the chicken broth every 30 to 45 minutes until you notice that the thermometer you had inserted into the thickest part of the thigh registers to 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 6: Cover it with foil if the turkey starts to get too dark.

Step 7: Let the turkey rest for about 10 to 15 minutes then transfer it to a serving plate. Garnish it with herbs if desired, then serve.
